Individuals who have time to share are invited to attend a Hospice Volunteer Training Class.

  • No experience is required, just an interest in helping others.
  • There is no commitment to become a hospice volunteer by attending the training.
  • Those who have recently lost a loved one are asked to wait a year before joining the patient-care volunteer team.
  • When Volunteer Training is completed, an interview is scheduled to discuss the volunteers' areas of interest and expertise.
  • In addition to working with patients and families, Hospice volunteers also provide support in the office, with newsletter mailings, activities, and in the bereavement program.

Volunteers are a special group of people. They expect nothing in return other than knowing that they helped other people. Listening is the greatest skill volunteers can offer our patients and families.

Hospice provides monthly in-services for volunteers.

Volunteers are honored at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Banguet held in the spring during National Volunteer Week. Click here t to see pictures of the 2005 Banquet held April 28 at the Hotel Ottumwa.

Volunteers are invited to join staff at the Iowa Hospice Organization (IHO) Annual Meeting held each November in Ames. Tuesday morning is designated for Volunteer Recognition, where each Hospice is represented by their Honored Volunteer of the Year. Volunteers are hosted to a luncheon and then attend afternoon workshop sessions.
