Hospice was founded in 1982 as Hospice of Wapello County.

Hospice is a:
  • free-standing, community-based hospice.
  • 501(c)(3) not-for-profit orgnization.
  • Medicare and Medicaid certified hospice.
  • member of the Iowa Hospice Organization (IHO).
  • member of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO).
    • The word hospice is derived from Latin "hospes" - meaning a place of hospitality.
    • History mentions hospices or "guest houses" in the time of the crusades.
    • Pilgrims traveling to the holy places would be cared for in the Hospice of a Monastery - fed, clothed and nursed back to health.
    • Today the word "hospice" reflects caring for persons who are on their pilgrimage from this life to the next.

    Milestones in the History of Hospice - Serving Davis and Wapello Counties:

    1982 - articles of Incorporation filed as Hospice of Wapello County in March
    1983 - accepted first patient in June
    1983 - received tax exempt status in October
    1989 - became Medicare and Medicaid certified
    1996 - served first family in Davis County
    1997 - changed name to Hospice - Serving Davis and Wapello Counties
    2002 - celebrates 20th Anniversary in Wapello County
    2004 - the Hospice House, an inpatient facility that accommodates seven Hospice patients for three levels of care; Hospice General Inpatient Level, Hospice Respite Level, and Hospice Residential Level.

    Milestones in the History of Hospice:
    1905 - Sisters of Charity in Dublin, Ireland built small hospitals to care for the dying in poverty stricken areas and called them hospices. In one of these hospices, Cicely Saunders was trained as a nurse. Her dream was to build a hospice in England.
    1967 - St. Christopher's Hospice in London, England was founded by Dame Cicely Saunders. St. Christopher's is considered the first modern hospice.
    1974 - Hospice of Connecticut opened as the first hospice in the United States. Hospice of Connecticut was founded by Florence Wald, Dean of the Yale University School of Nursing.
